New Song Sunday-I'll Seek the Lord Early

The fifth Sunday is upon us, and I have the whole time. I was actually sick the Sunday that I planned on doing my Primary Peril Game..and so that is what I am going to do this Sunday. You can find that idea if you check the April section of this blog.

So, I decided to post my introduction idea for the upcoming song in June, I'll Seek the Lord Early. I posted a similar version of this idea way back when I started this blog. I entitled it "Solve the Music Mystery"....but of course, I had to tweak it just a bit.

Prep:

Trench Coat
Brimmed Hat for you and another for your pianist (like Sherlock Holmes and Watson)
Dark Sunglasses
Magnifying Glass
Scriptures
Picture Prompts--(I happened to make up my own for this and will try and find a way to post them)
6-7 question marks you an put up around the room with different objects that go along with the song.

Presentation:

I am going to enter from the back of the room with my trench coat, hat, and sunglasses on. In my pocket will be the magnifying glass. I will act very mysterious like I am looking around the room for something, under chairs, behind kids...just to make sure all eyes are on me. I then will pretend like I am noticing them for the first time. "Oh, hello...have you seen it?" I'll ask. "Have you seen the new song in town....I heard it's a real good one.....I heard it's just waiting for us to find it. My boss told me I need to find out what that song is all about..I need to know what the message of the song is, what the melody is, and the words. Will you help me?" I plan on hamming this up a bit..maybe even faking an old time detective accent for the part.

At this point, I'll pull out my magnifying glass. I'll explain that this will help us find the clues. I'll had the magnifying glass to one of the kids and ask them to go find one of the clues. We'll discuss the clues as they are brought back. They don't have to be in any order. This part should really only take about 3 min. After all the clues are back, explain that you now need to get them in the right order so you can solve the mystery. Have the pianist play the song and show the first Picture Prompt. Say and sing the words. Have the children decide what object goes with what picture and get them in order.

After you have sung the entire song and put all the objects in order....tell them that they are awesome detectives and that they not only solved the mystery and found the song, but they now know how to "Seek the Lord Early"

Would you mind posting a list of the objects you are using as clues? This is my first week as chorister and I am creatively challenged. Your blog is a life saver! Thank you so much

Thank you so much for your great ideas. I appreciate them so much. I have a little unrelated question. One of the sites you recommend is sugardoodle.net. I have tried going there the past couple of days and a warning comes up that says I may hurt my computer by going there. Do you have the same problem? Do you go there anyway? I don't want to harm anything but would like to be able to access their website. Any suggestions?

I've had the same issue since Sunday, but had no problems in the past. I hope it gets fixed soon.

I'll check into it. I hope it doesn't have problems..so many of us love it.

Judd Family-

I post my list of objects soon, hopefully by Friday. I just haven't had time yet. School is almost out and the craziness of summer is upon me. :) Don't give up on me yet.

Thank you so much...you're amazing!

As Far as I can tell, there are no problems on my end with Sugardoodle. Perhaps you should check the firewall settings on your computer. I am so bad a computer advice...seek an expert on that one...and I'll stick to teaching primary songs to kids. :) Good luck.

I just wanted to tell you that I did the baseball game idea (with my own tweakings!) on Sunday, and we had a BALL - literally! Thanks for your wonderful ideas.

I was thinking of a "seeking" type activity for Discovery week, too. Thanks for your help!

I did the 5th Sunday thing as well, we did Baseball (again) for Junior and the Jeopardy thing for Senior (I wanted to test it out before I threw it at Jr., they would have been tooo wrestless for 50 minutes!)
Anyway, both of them were wonderful. I love my calling so much and I really appreciate your ideas. Thanks for being willing to share!

What a great idea! I am so doing this. I would love to know what your objects are going to be, here are a few I have thought of:
-"clock" with hands set to an "early" time
-scriptures
-cell phone (form of communication to represent prayer)
-Ensign (to represent living prophets)
--bike helmet--(to represent commandments that keep us safe)
--Coin with the scripture reference Luke 15:8-10 (parable of the lost coin) to represent "found"

I don't love all of these so I would love to know what others are thinking of doing! Thanks for this great great site!

Thanks for your ideas. I'm choirister in my ward & I LOVE it! I'm doing a 'primary pirates' treasure hunt for seek the lord early. I'm going to dress up as a pirate and give the kids eye patches. We will find clues, (visual aides) to the song on our treasure hunt and in the end the treasure box will hold a picture of Jesus. Thanks for all your ideas.

I did something a bit similar that week! Only we were "Scripture Sleuths", and I used the extra week as as an opportunity to teach a Hymn (As I Search the Holy Scriptures). We had 10 different color clues that had a scripture reference corresponding to one of the songs we've learned this year. (Most were the scripture reference at the bottom of the page.) There were matching cards in my scriptures to help with time. With Jr. I looked it up and made the key words *very* obvious, and they did pretty well. With Sr., I pushed the cards down, and had them actually look the clues up, and didn't make the hints so obvious. If either group needed more help, the pianist played the first line of the song. After singing the song, we listed and talked about the knowledge or wisdom we found from that scripture and song (e.g. Pre-mortal life, Jesus Christ's role, Faith, Baptism, Holy Ghost, Priesthood, etc.) The last clue was about the Scriptures, and we ended with Scripture Power. It turned out great, and took up just enough time.
